Initially, you may make a lot of colors that are unappealing as you experiment with the principles, but eventually you will be able to achieve both - making a color that you like and that does what you need it to do! They shouldn't have to be mutually exclusive. And, sometimes we can learn to embrace, and even love, those dull neutrals because they make everything else around them look so good.

Remember, color is relative. Colors can look good or bad because of the color next to them. A dark, muddy color (one that you might not like on it’s own) will probably look good next to a light, more saturated color. However, it is important that they relate somewhat, so take a little bit of the muddy, dark color and mix it in with the brighter color so they can relate and live in harmony. Now, those two colors will make each other look terrific. You will probably love both of those colors!
