Strong design allows the viewer’s eye to travel throughout the composition. This occurs when there is relative balance between all areas of the picture. If one side of the composition is visually dominant, our attention will be focused on that side. For example, if a very large, high contrast shape is on the left, but there is nothing on the right to balance it, our attention will remain on one side of the composition. As a result it will feel lopsided or out of balance. We call this being “side heavy,” The challenge, as well as the solution is diagrammed below.
