Yes! Finding the strongest solution often takes multiple tries. As a general rule, the repeated passes will build richness on your panel as well as increase your learning…much quicker than if a painting was resolved in one pass. The “history“ of your efforts usually enhances your final painting. If starting over means covering everything up with white paint, so there is no longer any trace of what came before, then this would be a missed opportunity to add value to your art.
There is a pervasive idea that mistakes are bad, and therefore should be hidden or corrected as fast as possible before anyone sees them. This however, runs counter to making art. Strong art is made stronger not necessarily by ease and perfection, but often from struggle, honesty and perseverance. If your art can eventually exhibit the correct solution, but also show evidence of the wrongness too, then it will usually be more impactful, relatable and memorable.
