A varnish is traditionally a removable final coat for your art. The varnish layer plays a dual role: it has an effect on the final appearance of the painting and also serves as a protective coating for the paint surface.
Some varnishes we recommend are...
Golden UVLS Varnish - gloss, satin, matte (a good option if you’re working on stretched canvas)
Polymer Varnish with UVLS (UltraViolet Light Stabilizers) is a waterborne acrylic varnish that dries to a protective, flexible, dust resistant surface over acrylic paint. It is removable with ammonia, and available in Gloss, Satin and Matte. (The satin is lovely!) Polymer Varnish remains soluble in alkaline solvents, such as ammonia. This means the varnish can be easily removed; taking with it any accumulated surface contamination without damaging the painting surface.
Dorland’s or Gamblin’s Cold Wax Medium
Because it is removable, is considered a protective varnish. If you like this sheen, this is your choice. Buff lightly!! Removal may require mineral spirits, and a little scrubbing, then cleaning with absorbent towels, and a final wash with warm, soapy water.
